WHEN TO BOOK YOUR HOBART PHOTOSHOOT
The best time of year to book your next family shoot in Hobart
Clients often ask me when’s the best time of year to book a family photoshoot... spoiler alert, there isn’t one!
In Hobart, each season brings its own kind of magic - whether it’s fragrance-filled spring afternoons or the golden glow of autumn light. While there's no single perfect time to book your family photoshoot, each season offers something special. Here’s how to choose what suits your family best, and our unique local surroundings.
Spring in Hobart (September - November)
Spring in Hobart is such a beautiful time of year, especially if you want to incorporate lush greenery and vibrant blooms in your photoshoot.
Pros:
Delicate blooms create dreamy backdrops - think the Botanical Gardens or Fitzroy Gardens, turning your photos into colourful works of art.
Temperatures are gentle and the light soft and flattering - perfect for comfortable outdoor sessions.
Booking now gives you plenty of time to frame your photos for Christmas (presents for the grandparents sorted!).
Cons:
The weather in Spring can sometimes be unpredictable and often windy. If you’re booking a photoshoot at this time of year, it’s helpful to be flexible and open to rescheduling if possible.
Some family members might struggle with allergies due to blooming flowers, pollen and increased winds.
Summer in Hobart (December - February)
Summer brings long days and warm weather to Hobart, making it a very appealing time of year to book a photoshoot.
Pros:
More predictable weather and warm Summer nights make this time of year an enjoyable and easy time to book a shoot.
Long, sunlit evenings (with sunsets around 8:30–8:45 pm) create stunning golden-hour opportunities.
Ideal for beach shoots - the ocean and sand at places like Seven Mile or Clifton Beach provide dreamy, natural scenes. Read more about my favourite Hobart beaches here.
Summer holidays make it easier to schedule family sessions without school-day conflicts.
Cons:
Warm temperatures may be a bit much for little ones or heavily pregnant women- especially during mid-day. Stay hydrated and plan sessions later in the day.
The late sunsets are beautiful but can be tricky for young children.
Autumn in Hobart (March - May)
Autumn in Hobart is definitely MY FAVOURITE time of year to photograph families, the days are shorter, and light is soft and golden.
Pros:
Autum’s cozy vibe lends itself well to intimate family photoshoots, capturing moments of closeness and affection.
Rich, earthy tones in the changing foliage - great for outfits and scenic backdrops.
Shorter days make timing more toddler-friendly - you’re unlikely to stretch past bedtime, and you still catch that gorgeous light.
Cons:
A few more chilly and changeable days - be ready with warm layers and flexible weather plans.
Autumn is popular, booking early is wise to avoid missing out.
Winter in Hobart (June - August)
Winter in Hobart is a beautiful time of year. The days are crisp, and despite the cold, this time of year lends itself well to lots of cuddles and imitate moments.
Pros:
Like Autum, Winter is a great time of year for families with younger children to book a photoshoot. The days are shorter, meaning an earlier start time that doesn’t interfere with the bedtime routine.
Winter offers a unique, serene atmosphere, perfect for capturing cozy and intimate family moments both indoors and outdoors.
Winter is often less busy, allowing for more flexible scheduling options.
Cons:
Cold weather can be uncomfortable, especially for young children, making it important to dress in warm clothing and select appropriate outdoor locations (Winter is probably not the best time to book a beach shoot).
Winter also comes with an increased chance of rain, so it’s helpful to be flexible and open to rescheduling if possible.
Bonus: Golden Hour Timing in Hobart
In summer, sunset can be as late as 8:30/9pm, however, once daylight savings ends, sunsets can be as early as 5pm.
If your kids’ bedtime is non-negotiable, Autumn or Winter sessions offer more flexibility.
How to Choose Your Perfect Time
Think about the vibe - Are you after bright and breezy (Summer), warm and rich (Autumn), fresh and floral (Spring), or intimate and cozy (Winter)?
Factor in family rhythms - schedule around school holidays, bedtimes, and daylight savings.
Consider locations - beach, bush, city, or home - all come alive differently each season.
Be flexible (but book early) - especially in Autumn, late Spring and Summer when spots fill up fast.
