5 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

What I look for in a Family Photographer (and what you should, too)

When you're choosing a family photographer, it can feel a bit overwhelming. There are so many talented Hobart photographers with beautiful Instagram feeds and portfolios out there - but how do you know who’s right for you?

After years of working with families (and being a mum myself), I’ve realised it’s not just about the final photos, it’s about the entire experience. If you’re investing in family photography, you deserve to feel supported, comfortable, and confident every step of the way.

So here are the five things I believe matter most when choosing a Hobart family photographer.

1. A timeless style you genuinely love

This might sound obvious, but it’s an important starting point: choose a photographer whose work you’re drawn to. Every photographer has a different style - some are light and bright, others are moody and dramatic. Some focus on classic portraits, while others have a more documentary style.

I like to think I’m a combination of the two, I love to capture stunning portraits but also and lean into connection and storytelling.

It’s also worth thinking about whether their editing style is something you’ll still love in 5, 10, or 20 years. Trends come and go, but a timeless, true-to-life approach will never feel dated on your walls (that’s my opinion anyway).

Your photos should feel like you, and they should stand the test of time. So, ask yourself: Do I love the way these moments are captured? Could I see myself in these images for years to come?

If the answer is yes—you’re on the right track.

2. A good experience (and a professional service)

Beautiful photos are only one part of what you’re paying for. The experience matters just as much - especially when you’re juggling kids, routines, and all the mental load that comes with being a parent.

A great photographer will offer an easy way to book, clear communication, thoughtful preparation, and a process that makes things feel easy. From helping you plan what to wear to guiding you through what happens after, you should feel taken care of at every step.

Photography should never feel like just another thing on your to-do list. When the service is done well, it feels more like a treat than a task.

3. Someone you connect with (and who’s great with kids)

The best photos happen when everyone feels relaxed. That’s why it’s so important to choose someone you feel comfortable with - someone who’s warm, calm, and genuinely loves working with children.

Whether your toddler is running wild or your baby needs a cuddle break, your photographer should be patient, understanding, and able to go with the flow. It’s not about getting “perfect” behaviour, it’s about capturing real, honest moments as they unfold.

When your photographer puts you at ease, it shows in the photos.

4. Someone who does the printing for you

These days, one of the most overlooked parts of family photography is what happens after the session.

You receive your gallery, and then... it just sits there. Because between deciding what to print, where to hang it, and figuring out sizes and frames, it’s easy to get stuck. Life moves on, and those precious images stay buried in your inbox.

That’s why I believe a full-service photographer should help you finish the job. From albums to wall art to beautiful little Lumi Tiles, I guide my clients through selecting the perfect pieces - and take care of all the printing and delivery.

It’s one less thing on your plate, and one more thing you’ll love seeing in your home.

5. Access to a client wardrobe

Outfits can make a big difference in how your photos look and feel - but figuring out what to wear can be stressful, especially if you’re pregnant or newly postpartum. A great photographer will help you plan outfits or (even better) provide access to a carefully curated client wardrobe.

For my sessions, I offer a selection of flattering, timeless dresses that photograph beautifully and suit a range of body shapes and sizes. It’s one more way to take the pressure off and help you feel confident and beautiful on the day.

Oh, and I also have a newborn and infant client closet too because I know finding an outfit for bub and also be a challenge sometimes!

In the end, it’s not just about the photos

It’s about how you feel in them. How supported you felt in the lead-up. How relaxed your kids were. How easy it was to go from “we should get family photos” to “I’m so glad we did.”

If that’s the kind of experience you’re looking for, I’d love to chat. Whether you’re ready to book or just want to explore your options, I’m here to make the process feel calm, considered, and meaningful from start to finish.

Because your memories matter - and you deserve to enjoy them, not just document them.
