WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR HOBART FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT
What to wear (or not to wear) to your Hobart family photoshoot
Planning what to wear to your next family photoshoot can often feel overwhelming, but don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be.
The most important styling tip I can give you is to make sure you look like YOU. I want you to look back on your images in years to come and notice the smiles on everyone's faces, not be distracted by the outfits you wore that day. I want your images to feel like your family.
Ok that’s great, but what do I actually wear? Let’s break it down.
What not to wear
Something you’re not comfortable - there’s absolutely no point wearing and outfit that you’re going to be uncomfortable in (and that goes double for your kids!). If you’re going to spend the entire session pulling your top up or fussing with the kid’s clothes, then it’s not worth it.
Matching outfits - please don’t feel the need to dress everyone in blue jeans and white shirts!
Logos or typography - these will be distracting and date your images.
Bright colours - these don’t photograph well.
Busy patterns - While subtle patterns can add texture, it's best to avoid overly bold prints or large logos that might divert attention. The goal is to keep the focus on your family's connections and emotions.
What to wear instead
Prioritise comfort and authenticity - choose clothing that reflects your family's style and everyone feels comfortable in.
Don’t be afraid of adding colour - I’m not one of those photographers who only tells their clients to wear different shades of beige!
Select a cohesive colour pallet - I find it easiest to choose one key colour and then build a complimentary/neutral colour pallet around it.
Coordinate without matching - select outfits that complement each other without being identical. This adds visual interest and showcases each family member's unique personality while maintaining unity in your photos.
Consider the location and season - tailor your outfit choices to our chosen location and time of year. Light fabrics and flowing dresses are ideal for a summer beach session, while layered outfits work well for a cosy Autumn shoot. If you’ve selected a park location, it’s probably best to avoid the colour green and opt for soft blues/pinks or earthy tones instead.
Incorporate textures and layers for interest and warmth - knit sweaters, scarves, or denim jackets can bring depth and dimension to your photos, making them visually engaging. Adding layers will also help you keep warm, especially during the colder months.
Plan ahead - organise your outfits ahead of time to ensure they’re washed and ready to go a few days prior to your shoot. And always bring a jacket (it is Hobart afterall).
Look for inspo - Pinterest a great place to start looking for some style inspo.
Ask your photographer - if in doubt, reach out to your photographer for advice. I help all my clients select the perfect outfit for their shoot!
