Hobart Maternity Photography: What to Expect in Your Session

Couple maternity session in Hobart Tasmania during sunset

If you’ve been thinking about booking a maternity session but feel a little unsure about what actually happens… you’re not alone.

As a Hobart maternity photographer, most of the mums I photograph tell me they’ve never done anything like this before. They’re not sure what to expect, they’re not confident in front of the camera, and they definitely don’t want anything that feels stiff, awkward or overly posed.

I wanted to walk you through exactly what it’s like to book a maternity session with me, so you know what you’re signing up for (spoiler: it’s all very relaxed and you won’t regret it!).

IT STARTS WITH YOUR ENQUIRY
Everything begins when you send me a message through my contact form.

Once I receive your enquiry, I’ll get back to you with everything you need to know to book your maternity session with me. This isn’t a long, overwhelming process - it’s simply a clear step-by-step guide so you know exactly what to do next.

At this stage, you’ll also choose your preferred session date so we can lock that in for you straight away.

If you’d like to chat things through before confirming anything, you’re also welcome to book in a 15-minute consult call. It’s completely optional, but a nice space to ask questions or get a feel for whether I’m the right photographer for you.

HELPING YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR SESSION
Once you’ve chosen your date and followed the simple booking steps, your session is officially locked in.

From here, I’ll send through your welcome guide. This is where things start to feel real, and also where everything gets much easier.

Your welcome guide includes:

  • What to expect from your session

  • A detailed “what to wear” guide

  • Access to my client wardrobe (if you’d like it)

  • Helpful tips to help you feel prepared without overthinking anything

You’ll also receive my location guide at this point, so you can start thinking about what kind of setting feels right for your session - whether that’s the beach, the city, or something a little quieter and more natural.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU AND SELECTING YOUR LOCATION
A little closer to your session, I’ll send through a short questionnaire.

This is one of my favourite parts of the process because it helps me get to know you properly - your family, your personality, and the kind of energy you want your photos to reflect.

Once I’ve received your questionnaire, we’ll confirm your chosen location together.

Sometimes clients already know exactly where they want to go. Other times, clients use my location guide to select a location that suits the look and feel they’re after.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING YOUR SESSION?
This is usually the biggest concern: “I’m so awkward in photos.”

And honestly, almost every mum says this to me before we start.

But here’s the truth, you’re never left wondering what to do. I gently guide you the whole time. Nothing is stiff or overly posed. I’ll suggest small movements, little moments with your partner or kids, and then step back to let things unfold naturally.

Most of the time, I’m chatting with you, helping you relax, and letting things feel really easy and unforced. You don’t need to perform or “be photogenic”. You just need to show up as you are.

If there are little kids involved, I lean into whatever they bring on the day, whether that’s chaos, cuddles, or complete unpredictability. That’s where the real magic usually is.

AFTER YOUR SESSION
Once we’re done, I’ll head off and carefully edit your gallery in a way that keeps everything natural, warm, and timeless.

Within 2 weeks you’ll receive a private online gallery where you can select your favourite images from your session. From there, you can also upgrade if you’d like to keep more images.

I keep the process really straightforward so you’re not left guessing what happens next.

A FINAL THOUGHT
If you’ve been on the fence about booking maternity photos because it feels a bit “out of your comfort zone”, that’s completely normal.

Most of the mums I photograph felt exactly the same way right before they did it.

But this is such a fleeting stage, one that often gets lost in the busyness of everything else. And it deserves to be remembered, not just for how it looked, but for how it felt.

If you’d love something calm, natural, and completely unforced, I’d love to photograph this season for you.

You can find all the details about my maternity sessions, including my popular Bump to Baby package, here.
