Best Beaches for Family Photos in Hobart

Best Hobart beaches for your next family photoshoot

Choosing the right location can completely shape how your photos feel.

As a family photographer in Hobart, one of the most common questions I’m asked is where to have family photos take, and beach sessions are always a favourite. Hobart has some incredibly beautiful beaches that photograph beautifully at sunset and allow sessions to feel relaxed, spacious and natural for families.

If you’re dreaming of timeless beach photos, here are my favourite Hobart beaches for family photography and why they work so well.

WHY BEACHES WORK SO WELL FOR FAMILY PHOTOS
Beach sessions are relaxed, spacious and perfect for children. The open environment allows little ones to move freely, parents to relax, and genuine moments to unfold naturally.

Soft sand, neutral tones and sunset light create timeless images that won’t date, making beach locations one of the most popular choices for family photography in Hobart.

SEVEN MILE BEACH
As the name suggests, Seven Mile Beach boasts seven miles of uninterrupted coastline, making it one of my most popular spots for a beach photoshoot.

Located around 20 minutes out of Hobart, the soft, golden sands of Seven Mile beach stretch as far as the eye can see, allowing plenty of room for the kids to run and play.

The sunsets over the sand dunes, creating the perfect opportunity for beautiful backlit group shots of you and your loved ones.

Seven Mile Beach is a dog-friendly, making is a great option if you want to include your fur-baby in your family photoshoot. This beach also has access to public bathrooms.

CLIFTON BEACH
Clifton Beach offers a unique blend of sandy shores and rocky cliffs, allowing for lots of variety for your family portraits. The rugged beauty of the rocks, smoothed by years of crashing waves, provides a dramatic contrast to the soft sands.

This beach is particularly beautiful during low tide when you can explore the tide pools and capture the reflections of the sky on the wet sand. While it’s located a little further out, Clifton Beach is definitely worth the 30-minute drive and, like Seven Mile Beach, there is plenty of room for the kids to run around.

HINSBY BEACH
Hinsby Beach is a beautiful beach just 15 minutes out of Hobart in Taroona. This secluded beach is known for its soft sands and calm waters, offering a peaceful setting for your family portraits. The waters here are often crystal clear, allowing you to capture stunning reflections of the sky and surrounding landscape in the tranquil shallows.

What sets Hinsby Beach apart is the small row of boat sheds. These iconic structures add a touch of nostalgia to your photos, creating a unique and backdrop for your family portraits.

ROCHES BEACH
Located 20 minutes out of Hobart in Lauderdale, Roches Beach is quiet and dog-friendly beach, making the perfect option for your next family photoshoot. The beach is framed by vegetation covered sand dunes and dark dramatic cliffs, creating the opportunity to capture a variety of different shots within one location.

Roches Beach faces the east, making it ideal for sunset backlit shots. It is also sheltered from Tasmania’s predominant south westerly winds and has access to public bathrooms. Roches Beach is an ideal location for capturing candid moments and creating a relaxed, beachy vibe for your family photographs.

BORONIA BEACH
Boronia Beach is a true hidden gem. It’s located 15 minutes south of Hobart along the coastline between Kingston and Blackmans Bay. Nestled between rugged cliffs and tall pines this beach is a great spot for family photos.

The towering sandstone cliffs give you the feeling that you found something special tucked away from the rest of the world, making it a truly secluded spot to capture intimate photos with your loved ones.

Getting down to the beach requires a 10-minute walk down a fairly steep track, but it’s definitely worth it (just make sure you wear comfortable shoes). Please note, Boronia Beach is located on a wildlife reserve and therefore no dogs are allowed.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BEACH FOR YOUR FAMILY?
The best location depends on your children’s ages, the time of year and the overall feel you love. Some beaches are calmer and sheltered, while others offer dramatic scenery and open space.

When you book a session, I’ll always guide you toward the location that suits your family best, so the experience feels relaxed and enjoyable.
